Message	told the judge; I had just tuned up my Corvette, and I wanted to stretch its legs. Near my house was a new subdivision. No houses, no cross streets, no people, and no speed limit signs. Just one cop. Back then Michigan law said that streets without posted limits were 25 mph by default. The judge understood I tried to go someplace "safe" to run it out; but even a sympathetic judge couldn't ignore "80 Over".
